Polyethylene (PE) The polyethylene of the general formula (-CH2- CH2-) n, consists of a plastic material which is obtained by the polymerization of ethylene. It is transparent or translucent ( when in thick layers ), light, tenacious , resilient , virtually unbreakable , chemically very resistant , good electrical insulator, softens at 70-80 ° C and melts at 100-200 ° C. Based on its density , polyethylene divided into High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) : The high density polyethylene has an almost branches free structure. It is one tensile -resistant rigid plastic with moderate impact resistance. It is used in bags (eg. the supermarket) in bottles, toys , hospital supplies , pipes for gas and water distribution , fuel tanks , etc. . Polyethylene is one of the most used polymers in industry , being widely used in the manufacture of “leaves”(tablecloths, curtains , wrapping, packaging , etc. .) , Containers (bags , bottles , buckets , etc. .) , Plastic pipes , children's toys, insulation for electrical wires etc. In the process of stretching the melt a filament is obtained which is used as an electrical insulator in filter screens , fancy yarns and coarse fabrics , especially carpets. Its main features are:
